How Smartwatches Are Changing Lives – and Saving Them
06.02.2025
An article in the February 6 edition of DIE ZEIT highlights the growing role of wearable technologies in detecting and preventing serious health conditions. Smartwatches and smartphones are increasingly being used as early warning systems for heart irregularities, respiratory issues, and other health anomalies—sometimes detecting dangers before doctors do.
The piece features both personal stories and expert opinions, including insights from Professor Aldo Faisal, Chair of Digital Health at the University of Bayreuth. Faisal's research demonstrates how AI-powered behavioral monitoring via smartphones can help personalize health interventions and improve mental wellbeing. His work also led to the development of the app Mindcraft, currently being tested in London to support adolescents dealing with depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.
The article underscores a central goal of the Digital Health and Data Science initiative at Bayreuth: to responsibly harness technology and data for better, earlier, and more personalized care.
